In view of the new powers transferred to the Community by the Treaty of Amsterdam, the issue of immigration, and in particular the fight against illegal immigration, has also been incorporated into all of the association and cooperation agreements signed since 1999, including with third countries in the Mediterranean basin, and into the partnership and cooperation agreements with the new independent states of central Europe, central Asia, the Balkans and the ACP countries.
Als gevolg van de nieuwe bevoegdheden die aan de Gemeenschap zijn toegekend bij het Verdrag van Amsterdam, is de migratieproblematiek, en in het bijzonder de bestrijding van illegale immigratie, ook opgenomen in alle associatie- en samenwerkingsovereenkomsten die sinds 1999 zijn gesloten, met name met derde landen uit het Middellandse-Zeegebied, alsmede in de partnerschaps- en samenwerkingsovereenkomsten met de nieuwe onafhankelijke staten van Midden-Europa en Centraal-Azië, de Balkanlanden en de ACS-staten.
