As a rule both the individual author and the practising artist, and other right-holders, are in a weaker position compared with the financially more powerful user, and therefore depend on the collective protection of collective management societies (CSs). At the same time the collective exercise of rights serves the purpose of making it easier for users to acquire them.
In de regel verkeren zowel de afzonderlijke auteurs als de praktiserende kunstenaars en andere rechthebbenden tegenover de economisch sterkere gebruikers in een zwakkere positie en zijn deze derhalve op de collectieve bescherming door MCB's aangewezen. Tegelijkertijd draagt het collectieve beheer van rechten tot de voor de gebruiker vereenvoudigde verwerving van rechten bij.
