While in no way denying Europe’s historic duty and responsibilities towards Israel, it is clear that Euro-Arab relations will be all the more fruitful, credible and legitimate if Europe takes on a wider range of Arab interlocutors, giving particular attention and visible political support to actors in civil society, associations and religious life, including the non-radical Islamists whom it has encouraged to participate in the democratic process.
Zonder ook maar enigszins afbreuk aan de plicht en historische verantwoordelijkheid van Europa tegenover Israël te willen doen, is het duidelijk dat de Euro-Arabische betrekkingen zoveel aan voordelen, geloofwaardigheid en rechtmatigheid winnen als Europa het spectrum van zijn Arabische gesprekspartners verruimt, en meer in het bijzonder zichtbaar aandacht en politieke steun geeft aan de vertegenwoordigers van het maatschappelijk middenveld, het verenigingsleven en de godsdienstige instanties, met inbegrip van de niet radicale islambeweging, die het tot deelname aan de democratische geplogenheden aangezet heeft.
