I walked with around 20 000 people – lesbian, gay, heterosexual, bisexual, transgender – through the main streets of Warsaw, with extremist demonstrators being pushed away by the police to the margins where they belong, and with lots of heterosexual citizens – such as women with their dogs watching from buildings – greeting us and saying that we, as lesbians and gays, were at the centre of society, in the mainstream.
Ik liep met zo’n 20 000 mensen – lesbiennes, homo’s, hetero’s, biseksuelen, transgenders – door de hoofdstraten van Warschau, terwijl extremistische demonstranten door de politie werden weggedrukt naar de marges waar ze thuishoren, en terwijl veel heteroseksuele burgers – zoals vrouwen die met hun honden toekeken vanuit gebouwen – ons groetten en zeiden dat wij, lesbiennes en homo’s, in het centrum, in de hoofdstroom van de samenleving staan.
