Sport holds an important place in the lives of many EU citizens and plays a strong societal role with a powerful potential for social inclusion in and through sport, meaning that participation in sport or in physical activity in many different ways contributes to inclusion into society; whereby inclusion in sport involves a combination of ‘sport for all’, equal access to sport, equal opportunities in sport, and varied demand-oriented sporting opportunities and sport facilities, and whereby social inclusion through sport involves inclusive participation in society, community development and strengthened social cohesion.
Sport neemt in het leven van veel EU-burgers een belangrijke plaats in en speelt een belangrijke maatschappelijke rol met een aanzienlijk potentieel voor sociale insluiting in en door de sport, wat inhoudt dat deelname aan sport of aan lichamelijke activiteit op vele verschillende manieren bijdraagt aan insluiting in de samenleving; insluiting in sport betekent een combinatie van sport voor allen, gelijke toegang tot sport, gelijke kansen in sport, en afwisselende, op de vraag afgestemde sportgelegenheden en sportfaciliteiten, en sociale insluiting door de sport betekent inclusieve deelname aan de samenleving, ontwikkeling van de gemeenschap en sterkere sociale samenhang.
