EU trade and development policies also recognize these obstacles and have also in various ways tried address these through a plethora of instruments, such as: trade preferences, trade promotion initiatives, micro-credit schemes, export stabilizing mechanisms (such as STABEX) etc. However, where the Fair Trade approach has succeeded - and EU policies and instruments are floundering - is in linking the various mechanisms into an integrated and coherent effort in support of local producers as they face the many obstacles in trying to sell their products on the EU market.
