All national health care systems are today faced with three major challenges, as the population of Europe is ageing, health care is increasingly effective but also becoming more expensive, and patients, having become true consumers, are also more demanding. Faced with these three challenges, the Commission has proposed three long-term objectives: access to health care for all, a high level of quality in health care and ensuring the financial viability of health care systems.
De zorgstelsels van de lidstaten worden voor drie grote uitdagingen gesteld: de vergrijzing in Europa, de meer geavanceerde, maar daardoor ook duurdere gezondheidszorg en de steeds veeleisender geworden patiënt, die zich feitelijk als 'zorgconsument' opstelt. Om deze drie uitdagingen het hoofd te kunnen bieden, heeft de Commissie zichzelf drie doelstellingen voor de lange termijn gesteld: universele gezondheidszorg, voortdurende verbetering van de kwaliteit van de zorg en betaalbare nationale zorgstelsels.
