Investigations have uncovered a series of illegal transactions which took place in various EU Member States in 2002 and 2003, revealing that, although the illegal excavations actually took place in Greece, the three Greek antiquities reached the USA via other EU Member States, such as Italy and other member countries of the single European area, such as Switzerland, notwithstanding Regulation (EEC) No 3911/92 on the export of cultural goods and Directive 93/7/EEC on the return of cultural objects unlawfully removed from the territory of a Member State, which seek to protect national treasures at Community level.
