I was there on a visit with the defence sub-committee when, for the first time, a British general, bearing on his sleeve the European emblem with its stars, introduced himself to me as a European soldier, I realised that something had happened here that would reverberate throughout history; you, Mr Schmit, may mention ‘European troops’ or the ‘forces of the European Union’, only in passing, but there is no doubt that this is a development with historic significance.
Toen we daar met de Subcommissie veiligheid en defensie op bezoek waren, trad mij voor het eerst een militair met Europese insignes, sterren op de mouw, tegemoet. Het was een Britse generaal, die zichzelf als Europees soldaat voorstelde. Op dat moment realiseerde ik me dat er een ontwikkeling van historisch formaat had plaats gevonden. En dan spreekt u, mijnheer Schmit, heel terloops van “Europese troepen”, van “troepen van de Europese Unie”, terwijl die toch beslist van een historische ontwikkeling getuigen.
