The 2006 Data Retention Directive obliges telephony and internet service providers to retain, for the purpose of investigating, detecting and prosecuting serious crime, electronic communication traffic and location data, as well as information about subscribers (including their telephone number, IP address and mobile equipment identifier).[41] The Data Retention Directive regulates neither the access to nor the use of data retained by national authorities.
