In coming months work will be pursued actively on priority files such as: Public procurement, Community patent, e-Europe Action Plan, including the gender perspective, Company law, including the European Company Statute and the Fair Value Directive, Insurance, Combating counterfeiting and piracy, Distance marketing of financial services, Foodstuffs, including the establishment of a European Food Authority, Product safety, including toys, as well as technical files in the Motor vehicles sector (motorcycles and type approval of vehic ...[+++]les for animal transport) and the Cosmetics Directive.

What is more, criminal organisations seem to be becoming increasingly involved in the trade in counterfeit products and those obtained through piracy, and this is causing the business community to lose confidence in the single market, leading, in turn, to a decline in investment. If we want the single market to be successful, then it is absolutely essential for inventors, research institutes, artists and large and small enterprises to have confidence in the Community’s ability to safeguard their interests effectively.

Due to be completed by March, this consultation aims to determine the economic impact of counterfeiting and product piracy in the Single Market, to assess the effectiveness of the relevant legislation and to come up with a number of initiatives to improve the situation.

It is therefore important that appropriate measures are taken to deal with possible piracy of design products.

This trend seems to be the result of a combination of economic and structural factors, such as: - a rapid increase in labour costs only partly compensated for by productivity improvements; - the depreciation of the dollar; - distortions of competition caused by unfair trading practices (dumping, subsidization, piracy, etc.) and the sealing-off of the markets of certain non-Community countries.
