Stresses that consumer interest in food safety issues has significantly increased, especially with regard to precautions; calls for the precautionary principle to become a basic principle of a policy of food safety, within the agreement on sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS); stresses that the objective is not to change the scope of existing WTO rules or to impose the EC approach to the precautionary principle on other WTO members but to reach a common understanding on its application; there should be no increased scope for projectionist measures, but greater clarity about what is, and what is not, WTO-compatible;
