From the perspective of the worker a job that pays is one which provides the worker with both pecuniary (earnings, pension schemes) and non-pecuniary returns more or less subjectively defined as a result of a host of characteristics such as job status, employer behaviour, opportunities for education and on-the-job training, working hours, type of contractual arrangements, fringe benefits provided by the employer (pre-school childcare, training, health care, accommodation, etc.), distance travelled to work and commuting.
Een werknemer vindt zijn arbeid lonend als die hem zowel financiële (inkomen, pensioenstelsel) als niet-financiële voordelen biedt; het niet-financiële rendement kan min of meer subjectief gedefinieerd worden als het resultaat van uiteenlopende aspecten zoals de status van die baan, het gedrag van de werkgever, de kansen voor opleiding en on-the-job training, werkuren, contractuele regelingen, bijkomende voordelen (kinderopvang, opleiding, gezondheidszorg, woning...), afstand naar het werk, pendelen.
