In 2000, two directives were adopted: the employment equality directive, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, religious belief, age and disability in the area of employment; and the racial equality directive, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race or ethnicity, again in the context of employment, but also in accessing the welfare system and social security, and goods and services.
In 2000 werden twee richtlijnen aangenomen: de richtlijn inzake gelijke behandeling in arbeid die discriminatie verbiedt op grond van seksuele geaardheid, godsdienstige overtuiging, leeftijd en handicap met betrekking tot werkgelegenheid; en de richtlijn inzake rassengelijkheid die discriminatie verbiedt op grond van ras of etniciteit, opnieuw in het kader van werkgelegenheid, maar ook bij de toegang tot de verzorgingsstaat en sociale zekerheid, en goederen en diensten.
