Besides reminding us of a dark chapter in our history, the 200 anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, during which an estimated 15 million people were forcibly removed from Africa, also highlights the fact that slavery and the slave trade had been practised all over the world and for thousands of years, albeit not on such a large scale as during those dark centuries of the transatlantic slave trade.
De tweehonderdste verjaardag van de afschaffing van de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel, in het kader waarvan naar schatting 15 miljoen mensen gedwongen werden Afrika te verlaten, herinnert ons niet alleen aan een donker hoofdstuk uit onze geschiedenis, maar doet ons ook beseffen dat slavernij en slavenhandel duizenden jaren lang overal ter wereld plaatsvonden, zij het niet op zo grote schaal als tijdens de donkere eeuwen van de trans-Atlantische slavenhandel.
