The Commission and ESA point out that “It is therefore important for Europe to pursue cutting-edge themes of space science, and space-based contributions to the understanding of the climate and our planet”, such as the behaviour of our Sun and its influence on the Earth, the origins and evolution of the solar system, the origin and evolution of stars etc. At the same time, of growing importance is the investigation of the phenomena of global change and all major Earth-sciences themes: Earth’s interior, its physical climate, its geosphere/biosphere, the atmosphere and the marine environment, and their impact on mankind.
