The night before 21 March, the weather conditions were anticyclonic, no wind, little convection and a warm air mass about 600 meters above, stopping the vertical dispersion of the pollutants.
Tijdens de nacht die voorafging aan 21 maart heerste er een hoge luchtdruk, was het windstil, trad er weinig convectie op en bevond er zich een warme luchtlaag op ongeveer 600 m hoogte, waardoor verticale dispersie van de verontreinigende stoffen werd verhinderd.
