Le opzioni sono attività condizionate che forniscono ai loro detentori il diritto, ma non l'obbligo, di acquistare (nel caso di una call option) dall'emittente dell'opzione (writer) o di vendere a questo (nel caso di una put option) attività finanziarie o non finanziarie (lo strumento di riferimento) a un prezzo predefinito (strike price o prezzo base) entro un certo periodo di tempo (opzione di tipo americano) oppure a una certa data (opzione di tipo europeo).

Options are contingent assets which give their holders the right, but not the obligation, to purchase from (in the case of a call option) or to sell to (in the case of a put option) the issuer of the option (the option writer) financial or non-financial assets (the underlying instrument) at a predetermined price (the strike price) within a given time span (American option) or on a given date (European option).
