Dall'ultimo trimestre del 1998 la febbre catarrale degli ovini detta "blue tongue" - malattia virale trasmissibile dagli insetti - è comparsa nel territorio dell'Unione europea e più particolarmente nelle isole greche del sud-est del mare Egeo, in Sardegna, nelle isole Baleari e recentemente in Grecia - a causa dell'aumento della temperatura in queste regioni.
