Indeed, dialogue will only be lasting and productive if, over and above the institutional aspects of free trade, it puts into practice a true resolve to facilitate access for European businesses to the American market (in particular by removing all bureaucratic obstacles to trade and investment), and to pursue convergent policies vis-à-vis third countries (such as access to the Japanese market, the protection of intellectual property in China, and respect for basic social norms, etc.).
Van een vruchtbare en duurzame dialoog zal moeilijk sprake kunnen zijn indien naast de institutionele vrijhandelsaspecten op de Amerikaanse markt ook ruimte wordt geschapen voor Europese bedrijven (met name via opheffing van handels- en investeringsbelemmeringen) en indien een convergent beleid wordt gevoerd ten aanzien van derde landen (onder andere via toegang tot de Japanse markt, bescherming van het intellectueel eigendom in China, naleving van elementaire sociale normen, enz.).
