Faced with this situation, I feel that the EU has major responsibilities and is duty bound, at world level and thus within the UN, to launch an entirely different energy policy, one that is fair, sustainable and genuinely intended to serve the citizens, and to do so with the help of politicians, oil companies and civil society. We must also step up the fight against financial crime and against tax havens; we must block the financial accounts and the profits of dictators and profiteers of all kinds.
Ik denk dat de Europese Unie op dat vlak belangrijke verantwoordelijkheden draagt en dat zij zich op mondiaal niveau, en dus binnen de VN, moet inzetten voor een volstrekt ander energiebeleid, voor een billijk en duurzaam beleid dat echt in dienst staat van de burgers. Daartoe moet zij een beroep doen op politieke instanties, oliemaatschappijen en het maatschappelijk middenveld. Bovendien moeten we de financiële criminaliteit en de belastingparadijzen harder aanpakken, en de bankrekeningen en de winsten van dictatoren en profiteurs van allerlei allooi blokkeren.
