The theatre originated in Greek antiquity; its repertoire began with Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles and in the classical era spread to the four corners of Europe with Shakespeare and Molière and then Chekhov and Strindberg, to mention only the playwrights whose plays are most commonly performed.
