At present, the issue of the resettlement of refugees in the European Union is not properly coordinated and only 10 Member States resettle refugees on a yearly basis, causing a lack of strategic use of resettlement as an EU external policy instrument. I welcome the Commission’s decision to set up the European Asylum Support Office, which will be able to offer support to the Member States in carrying out resettlement initiatives, while ensuring coordination of policies within the EU.

Op dit moment wordt de hervestiging van vluchtelingen in de Europese Unie niet goed gecoördineerd en nemen jaarlijks niet meer dan tien lidstaten deel aan de hervestiging van vluchtelingen, waardoor er te weinig strategisch gebruik wordt gemaakt van hervestiging als instrument van het externe asielbeleid van de EU. Ik verwelkom het besluit van de Commissie om het Europees Ondersteuningsbureau voor asielzaken op te richten. Dit bureau zal ondersteuning geven aan de lidstaten bij het uitvoeren van hervestigingsinitiatieven en zal het beleid binnen de EU coördineren.

I would like to point out that this Office must recognise that a common asylum policy needs to be built upon one word, as has already been mentioned, and that is solidarity: solidarity towards asylum seekers travelling to Europe who are entitled to protection, which the said office must ensure, and, as rightly stated by the Commission, solidarity towards those countries who have been shouldering the burden alone, without any assistance.
