La direttiva comunitaria "Habitat" (direttiva 92/43/CEE del Consiglio sulla conservazione degli habitat naturali e seminaturali e della flora e della fauna selvatiche) stabilisce un sistema di protezione per vari animali e piante e diversi tipi di habitat e prevede inoltre la creazione, entro giugno 1998, di una rete di siti protetti, (chiamati "Natura 2000"), che ingloba le zone di protezione speciale ai sensi della direttiva "Uccelli selvatici" , nonché i siti proposti dagli Stati membri ai sensi della stessa direttiva "Habitat".
The Habitats Directive, 92/43/EEC, envisages a scheme of protection for a range of animals and plants as well as a selection of habitat types. It provided for the creation, by June 1998, of a network of protected sites known as Natura 2000, which will embrace special protection areas designated under Wild Birds Directive, as well as sites proposed under the Habitats Directive.
